The Participant Observer Recipe of the Month is Thai Beef Satay. A ubiquitous street food in Southeast Asia, satay is the perfect savory snack. The ingredients are nowadays easy to find, and satay is a wonderful treat to eat with friends on a summer's eve.

This month's Book of the Month selection is Wife of the Gods by Kwei Quartey. The first in a series of delectable police procedure mysteries set in Ghana. Unlocking Ghanian culture is key to unlocking the mystery of "whodunnit".

Today (Friday), kicks off San Diego Pride festivities all around San Diego with the 2-day Pride Festival starting on Saturday (note: several other Pride-related events are included in our listing). Also on Friday, the mind-bending Sci-Fi romp Everything, Everywhere, All at Once will be screened outdoors atop the Hyatt.

Saturday, a 2nd Annual Frida Celebration will take place at Mujeres Brew House. At the Hazard Center UltraStar, the Hong Kong set film May You Stay Forever Young will be shown. An International Mariachi Summit Gala Concert will take place at the Civic Theatre. The outdoor (Amici Park) Little Italy summer film series continues with a showing of Nuovomondo (The Golden Door).

Sunday, the House of Colombia will host its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. At the Old Globe, Thinking Shakespeare Live! will be a lively exploration of the language of Shakespeare.

Tuesday, the film Crazy Rich Asians will be screened on the roof of the Hyatt downtown.

Wednesday, Warwick's Book Store will host Eve Chase who will discuss her latest book, The Birdcage. The Hayao Miyazaki anime film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind will be shown both Wednesday (7:00 PM) and Thursday (11:00 AM) at the Angelika Film Center.

Thursday, Comic Con begins, bringing innumerable legions of pop culture devotees to the Convention Center. There will be another Kamishibai Storytime at the Mission Valley Library. At the Chula Vista Library, Richard Carrico will deliver a talk entitled: Killing the Demons at Mission San Diego de Alcalá. The North Coast Rep will begin performances of The Remarkable Mister Holmes. At the Digital Gym, you can watch the film Afro-Punk, and there will be a live in-person Q&A with the film's director, James Spooner.

Next Saturday a 6-week "Summer Shakes" Shakespearean acting workshop will begin at Liberty Station. The House of Peru will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park. Ukraine: Songs of Freedom at the Coronado Library will feature an afternoon of Ukrainian music. The Little Italy Summer Film Series will continue at Amici Park with a screening of the Fellini film Fred e Ginger (Fred and Ginger). Colombian band Monsieur Perin will perform at the Music Box. At the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, there will be a Disney-produced Encanto Sing-Along Concert.
